This first act of The Crucible shows just how pent up with anger these people are, that when given the chance they will use the situation to settle personal grudges with other people they dislike. It really seems like these are the exact opposite of an ideal Puritan settlement, they are all running around wrongfully accusing each other just because they don't like something about the other, and have no problem seeing their neighbor tried or hung because they have an argument or different view. And in amongst all of this witch-calling are land disputes, money disputes, sect rivalries and affairs. When you think of an ideal Puritan village you would think they would have respect for one another and not be involved in all of these things, but I guess they had enough. They're not perfect, after all. There's only so much anyone, even the religious, can take.
I had not thought of how the ideal puritan village would be much more respectful and show their religion. It amazes me that such a "religious" place would take grudges out on a friend, neighbor, enemy or whoever in a way that could easily get the person killed. I do not understand how someone could send a person to their death over land, money, sects, affairs, and small little infractions.
ReplyDeletethats is such a good comparision!!People would usually never think of anything like that. They didnt allow anyone to practice different religions but you could blame any person for being a witch, very interesting. I think that if they didnt have all the hate towards one another none of this accusing would have ever happened
ReplyDeleteI liked how you put no one is perfect and how even the religious can only take so much as well. In which we sometimes forget that even though we are Christains people sometimes pushes our wrong buttons and we cant take any more. That point made me think for a little bit and understand more about the disputes now.
